Description: SIGNIFICANCE- "Let the Light In" is the result of my highly expressive style to communicate to female victims and survivors of domestic violence across the globe. I'm speaking woman to women through my own intimate processing of our collective experience. Despite any differences in terms of context, I attempt to find common ground as far as thoughts, feelings, challenges, strengths and survival instinct which we manage throughout the chaos of often hidden lives. The materials and techniques I employ serve as both imagery, therapy, and advocacy. As an artist and woman, the process to create this piece has been an emotional journey, but nevertheless intended to offer healing and support to these beautiful, capable women.

*This painting is varnished with professional archival quality varnish which will protect the painted surface from UV damage and wear & tear for years and years. It may require an occasional dusting with a lint-free cloth.

*The canvas is a high quality gallery wrapped canvas (1.5 inches deep), so it may be displayed as is, and doesn't require a frame. However, it may be framed if you wish. Tray frames are a great choice for this type of artwork so that it doesn't interfere with the surface of the canvas. Please DO NOT cover with glass.

NOTE: Mary Ann will be donating one original artwork to a local TAIFWE sponsored facility in her immediate surroundings.

My vision for this piece is one that evokes feelings of joy, freedom, justice, and hope for all survivors. Specifically, I focus on women and mothers in this piece. That is not to deny the representation of the many men who fall victims as well.

During the process of creating this piece, I tried to achieve a delicate balance between mindfulness and spontaneity. I had a loosely planned palette to hone in on the euphoric feelings of being released from the previous life that was all "they" had known, to a glorious new beginning full of promise, change, hope, and strength. The process of avoiding possible traumatic stimuli was not only a challenge of logistics, but also paved an emotional journey in resolving this painting. I finally gained momentum once I discovered the therapeutic value inherent to my process. The physical nature of scratching, sanding, gluing, and stitching was itself a release of any feelings resulting from thoughts (whether conscious or subconscious) triggered by the theme. The end result became a quiet conversation between me the artist and the women out there suffering and surviving. Despite areas of color intensity and dramatic contrast which promote life energy, there are those quiet conversations in between... if one looks.
